The Canucks got their men in free agency. Now the big question is who they are going to get rid of.
After acquiring top-four defenseman Keith Ballard in a five-player trade with Florida at the draft and adding top-three defender Dan Hamhuis as a free agent less than a week later, Vancouver has nine NHL-proven defenders under contract. Six of them—Ballard, Hamhuis, Sami Salo, Alexander Edler, Christian Ehrhoff and Kevin Bieksa—are all scheduled to make more than $3.25 million next season.

The National Hockey League Players' Association has filed a grievance over the league's rejection of the landmark $102 million contract between Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils. The league rejected the 17-year deal contract last week, saying the longest contract in league history violated its salary cap.
