Right winger Jonathan Cheechoo is headed back out West. The Dallas Stars announced Saturday that the former San Jose Sharks standout has accepted a tryout invitation. "We're pleased that Jonathan has accepted our invitation to come to our training camp," Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said in a release. "He has shown the ability to be an effective scorer in this league." Cheechoo's career descent continued last season after he was traded to the Ottawa Senators in the deal that sent Dany Heatley to San Jose.

It was early August when the Chicago Blackhawks declined to pay Antti Niemi the $2.75 million he was awarded in arbitration. He became an unrestricted free agent, one month after other free-agent goalies had begun their search for starting jobs. Or as his agent put it, it was like selling a big-screen television the day after the Super Bowl. Not the best timing. ?But at the same time, he?s a pretty good player,? Niemi?s agent Bill Zito told Sporting News.
