All the rumors, all the stories, all the hype, all of it ends right where it began—with Ilya Kovalchuk in a Devils sweater. Maybe.

On July 19, the Devils and Kovalchuk's agent, Jay Grossman, each announced that a deal had been reached between the two parties, and that Kovalchuk will be a member of the Devils for a long time to come.

An extremely long time—Kovalchuk's contract will pay him $102 million over 17 years, at which point, the winger will be 44 years old.

And therein lies the rub. The NHL rejected Kovalchuk's contract on July 20, ruling that the contract is an attempt to circumvent salary cap rules.

The problem lies with the length of the contract and the low salary at the end of it, which the NHL argues exists only to lower the yearly...
