Panthers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Thu, 09 Sep 2010 18:30:12 PDT
pThe Panthers are going to struggle to find scoring again this season, given that Nathan Horton (20 goals, 37 assists in 2009-10 despite missing substantial time because of a knee injury) was sent packing to Boston after telling new general manager Dale Tallon he wouldn't mind a change of scenery./p pWith that in mind, the Panthers are counting on their goaltending even more than before. /p pThe Panthers have a bona fide All-Star in goaltender Tomas Vokoun, who has taken quite a beating in his three seasons in Florida. Vokoun is a free agent at the end of this season, and with Florida banking on the idea that 20-year-old Jacob Markstrom is the future, Vokoun likely does not fit into the Panthers' plans.

Notice a chill in the air? September arrives and bring the return of the National Hockey League -- on the ice, not in boardrooms, conventional halls or hearing chambers. Feel free to cheer. Sporting News notes the change in season with its 2010-11 Hockey yearbook, which previews the marathon to next June's crowning of a new Stanley Cup winner. To mark the occasion, SN provides online looks at all 30 teams, leading up to the season's start -- which again this year is in Europe.

Zdeno Chara and his Boston teammates are working out in Wilmington, Mass., preparing for the coming season. Meanwhile, his agent is believed to be talking with Bruins management on a contract extension, according to the Boston Herald. ?Of course I want to stay in Boston and be part of this team the rest of my career,? Chara said. ?I enjoy being a Bruin.? Chara, the Bruins' captain, can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. It's likely he would be the top player on the market unless the Bruins re-sign him.
