Starting guard Tony Allen sat out the Grizzlies' 98-80 loss on Sunday afternoon at Boston with a sore hip and knee, and his absence was noticeable.
Because they've have had to play for the last month without forward Zach Randolph, their go-to-scorer and partner-in-crime with twin tower center Marc Gasol, they have had to create easy baskets with their defense. And no Grizzlies player creates more havoc than Allen.
Call him whatever cliche you want, such as the straw that stirs the drink, the match that lights the fuse. But the reason Memphis leads the NBA in steals at 10.57 per game?and that doesn't even account for deflections?is that Allen's energy gets his teammates in a lather.

Kevin Garnett matched his season-high with 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Boston Celtics to their fourth straight win, 98-80 over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. Paul Pierce scored 21 points, moving nine behind Hall of Famer Larry Bird for second place on the club's all-time list, and Ray Allen added 12.
