The Nationals are at the end of another year in which their future is more important than their present, and they're spending the last month of the season assessing what might make them better next year.
Performances like those of Danny Espinosa are what keeps them going this time of year. The infielder has been tremendous in his first five games in the majors.
Starting at shortstop for the first time, Espinosa hit two homers, including his first career grand slam, and drove in six runs. The team's third-round pick in 2008, Espinosa came up as a shortstop but will play most of the month at second base. The team is hoping to pair him with Ian Desmond—last year's September star and this year's rookie shortstop—in the middle of its infield.

MLB Power Poll: Sins of the Padres (SportingNews.com)

It's impossible to talk about the San Diego Padres' 2010 season without using some variation of the word "surprise." As in, they were surprisingly good for so long that it's pretty surprising they've fallen so quickly. On Aug. 26, they had 76 victories and were -- surprisingly (OK, shockingly) -- tied with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays in the loss column in the race for baseball's best record. When Labor Day arrived, they still had 76 victories.

The last thing rookie Danny Espinosa expected five games into his major league career was to take a curtain call. Espinosa drove in six runs, hitting a grand slam, a solo homer and getting two other hits, and helping the Washington Nationals rout the New York Mets 13-3 Monday for their third straight victory.

The New York Mets have scratched left-hander Johan Santana from his scheduled start Tuesday. The team announced the move Sunday in Chicago after Santana threw a bullpen session at Wrigley Field. The team did not say when Santana would return to action. Santana left his previous start Thursday after five innings, with what the team called a left pectoral strain. He thought he was well enough to take his next turn, and by all accounts his bullpen session Sunday went well.

The Washington Nationals are all but certain to finish last in the National League East. After taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates, they realize how much worse it could be. Ryan Zimmerman drove in four runs, Adam Dunn homered and Jason Marquis won his second in a row after previously going winless all season as the Nationals beat the Pirates 8-1 in a matchup of last-place clubs Sunday.
