Miguel Montero struck out on a 4-2 pitch Monday, although the mistake was not noticed at the time and was not challenged.

Montero had a ball—and a possible walk—taken away on his at-bat in the seventh inning, when he was hit high on the right arm on a 2-2 breaking ball from Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner. Montero started to walk to first base but was called back to the plate when plate umpire Bruce Dreckman ruled that Montero did not attempt to get out of the way of the pitch.

Montero clearly made no move to avoid the ball, but the pitch was not called a ball or a strike, as it should have, been according to baseball rules. The applicable part of Rule 6.08(b) says that, in that case, "if the ball is outside the strike zone when it touches the batter, it shall...
MLB Power Poll: Sins of the Padres (SportingNews.com)
Mon, 06 Sep 2010 23:11:00 PDT
It's impossible to talk about the San Diego Padres' 2010 season without using some variation of the word "surprise." On Aug. 26, they had 76 victories and were -- surprisingly (OK, shockingly) -- tied with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays in the loss column in the race for baseball's best record. When Labor Day arrived, they still had 76 victories.

With a runner on third base in the ninth inning, Buster Posey hit a flare to right field that was caught by a diving Gerardo Parra. Two innings later, Posey and the Giants got a break. Posey hit a two-out single to the same spot Parra robbed him earlier and Nate Schierholtz followed with a two-run triple, helping San Francisco stay close to the NL West lead with a 2-0 win over the Arizona...

Two children have been taken to the hospital after being struck by a bat and a ball at Monday's game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants. A 13-year-old boy seated near Arizona's dugout just beyond the start of the protective netting was hit on the right side of the head in the fourth inning after San Francisco's Buster Posey lost his bat swinging at a pitch.
Pence's homer lifts Astros over Diamondbacks (AP)

Get rid of the first eight games of the season and the Houston Astros would be a .500 team. Unfortunately the first week of the season does count in the standings and the Astros are eight-games under after Hunter Pence's three-run home run in the first inning helped them beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Sunday.
